Before joining Open-IT in 1995, Bryan spent 25 years with Sema Group plc (formerly CAP Group plc, then part of Schlumberger, then ...). During this period, his experience covered language design, compiler design and implementation, operating systems, real-time and communications-based systems, performance analysis and system consultancy. He was chief designer for a number of major projects in the real-time/communications systems area and his consultancy activities included studies of distributed systems and supporting communications facilities for major organisations.

From 1990 to 1996 he had a key role in the work of the MOD Methods for C3I Interoperability (MCI) research programme to develop a methodology, based on the concepts from Open Distributed Processing standards (ODP), for the specification of command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) systems. Using object concepts, the approach allowed system requirements to be effectively coupled with implementation choices. The approach was subsequently applied in support of the work of the Joint Command Process Study for the MOD and in related work for NATO.

From 1997 to 2000 he was part of a team responsible for a MoD programme for the integration of Defence communications and information systems. This involved both work on the definition of the overall architecture of Defence CIS, and management of Task Groups developing technical policy and guidelines for the provision of network and directory services.

He was a major contributor to the multinational team on the COMBINE project (COMponent-Based Interoperable Enterprise system development), a European Commission Fifth Framework project to provide and demonstrate a model-based approach to the development of Interoperable Enterprise component systems.

Bryan has been an active participant in the development of Open System standards since 1980 when he became Chairman of the British Standards Institute Technical Committee responsible for OSI, ODP, QoS and other software engineering standards. He is Convenor of ISO/JTC1/SC7/WG19, the group responsible for maintenance of ODP standards and management of Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) submitted by OMG for inclusion in the ODP range of standards.

Bryan is also an active participant in the OMG. He worked with Sandy Tyndale-Biscoe on Open-IT’s contribution to the successful submission on a UML Profile for EDOC. He is co-chair of the C4I Domain Task Force developing OMG specifications for systems supporting crisis response operations. He is involved in the OMG activity to revise the OMA Guide and developing the Model Driven Architecture (MDA)

Outside his IT activity, Bryan enjoys reading (an eclectic taste ranging from philosophy to Proust via history and Tolkien), listening to music (classical, folk and jazz), and walking.
