Chris has demonstrated accomplishments in IT consultancy at all levels, and has recognized business management, business development and leadership skills. A full CV is available here.

Chris was a founder of OPEN-IT Ltd. in 1992, and has a specific interest in the development and application of long-term strategies for IT interoperability in business. He is an experienced Principal Consultant, with 28 years successful work in the IT industry across a variety of markets. Between 1978 and 1992, Chris was a Principal Consultant with Sema Group plc (formerly CAP Group plc, then part of Schlumberger, now ...), ultimately responsible within Sema Group Consulting for its Technical Consultancy practice.

His project background has included the management of small and large project teams, consultancy to and liaison with suppliers, and all aspects of system implementation. Chris has been an advisor to a wide range of private and public companies and government departments on overall strategic direction (particularly for communications infrastructures), and has worked in many different application areas. He has frequently been responsible for the appraisal of available equipment and services and for recommending appropriate solutions. He is currently working with a number of organizations seeking process and productivity improvement. For example, he has been working with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to apply RM-ODP Enterprise Modelling concepts to the MOD business processes, as part of a major initiative to modernize the way MOD procures and manages information systems. He has also been helping a major telecoms company with the business processes necessary to successfully run an international 24x7 web-hosting operation. Most recently, he has been working with a major manufacturing company to assess and procure an EAI solution for its distributed business needs.

Since 1979, Chris has been a prime mover in the international effort to develop open standards for Network and Systems Management.  Between 1980 and 1990 he led the OSI Management Architecture work as Rapporteur, and is the current editor for the architectural framework for OSI Management, ISO 7498-4. Since 1988, he has been promoting the need for standards for Quality of Service in distributed systems and is currently editor of the ISO/IEC Quality of Service Framework (ISO 13236), the QoS Guide to Methods and Mechanisms (ISO 13243) and the current work on QoS in ODP (ISO 15935). Chris has a specific interest in the ‘systems approach’ to IT, having tackled many assignments where security policy, management policy, quality of service and other constraints were a major factor in determining the total systems solution.

Chris previously initiated and chaired the OMG efforts on Quality of Service and the C4I Roadmap and Architecture work and is currently involved in a number of other OMG groups - specifically working with other OPEN-IT experts in the UML for EDOC area. Chris is one of the promoters of the forthcoming UML for Quality of Service work. Open-IT experts have leading roles in the C4I arena, enterprise language development, object modelling, Model Driven Architecture and other areas.

Chris was a major contributor to the EC COMBINE project.

Chris is a regular EC reviewer, a PhD examiner and a member of a number of research committees. He has published over 70 papers, articles and books and gives frequent training courses in his specialist subjects.

Chris gained an honours degree in Computer Science at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1978.  During his studies he spent two years in industry, working on a variety of real-time and communications systems.

Chris also loves music, good food and wine (and fine ale), plays squash and is an RFU qualified rugby coach. When not working, he is often to be found pottering the extensive UK canal network in his narrowboat, with his wife Ros and their three young children.
