Peter Gibbon has over 30 years of experience in networking
and data communications, covering design and installation of networks for
multi-national clients and the development of architectures for networks and
distributed systems. He has earned a world-wide reputation from his involvement
in standardization for networks and plays a key role in the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) development of open standards. Peter's
experience has been gained as a consultant with IBM and as an associate of Open-IT
Ltd. Peter specializes in:

Peter became an independent consultant in May 1993, and

defence client on a command and control network infrastructure project, with
specific emphasis on relating users’ Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements
to practical and affordable solutions in practice. The work is primarily
targeted at communications infrastructures, but is applicable to a wide
range of underlying technologies. |

Project leader for the
development of the ISO Network Layer architecture for the Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) set of standards, enabling a variety of different
network types to work compatibly together. |

Protocol guidance and
selection advice to a major government department in the area of Open
Distributed Processing (ODP). |

a multi-country demonstrator project to show the practicality of OSI
protocols in a multi-application, multimedia environment using the latest

Peter joined IBM in 1967 as a Systems Engineer and helped
pioneer international commercial networks for a number of customers in
applications such as satellite remote job entry, timesharing etc. His activities
gained him 11 marketing excellence awards. He spent three years in the USA in
the mid-seventies as part of the SNA architecture group. On his return to the UK
he assumed the dual role of advising customers on communications directions and
participating in national and international standards making. In the standards
area, Peter has represented not only IBM but also the computer industry as a
whole, both nationally and internationally. He was appointed Country Consultant
to IBM UK in 1990. During his career with IBM, Peter's major assignments
included:

Advising on networking
strategy and protocol selection to a variety of customers but typically
multi-national organizations with a world-wide networking requirement |

Being part of the
US-based team responsible for IBM's Systems Network Architecture (SNA)
extensions into multi-systems networking and distributed systems |

Carrying out the role of the Country Standards
Authority for IBM UK, being responsible for all aspects of standardization
as it affected IBM, but with particular emphasis on communications and
networking standards. He was
responsible for IBM UK's external standards programmes including
representation on appropriate committees and undertaking key technical
representation responsibilities
directly. |
As a result of being on UK committees, he was selected to
represent the UK national body internationally in standardization matters and
took on appropriate Editor and Rapporteur responsibilities.
Peter is
frequently called upon to give lectures, seminars and courses. Peter lectures on
a range of training courses and has presented in locations as diverse as the
USA, Japan, Italy, France, Korea, Sweden, Switzerland and Canada.
